  Travel Tips

Visa

A visa to enter in Brazil is required for some foreign nationals of some countries. Please, check at a Brazilian consulate or embassy in your country of citizenship if a visa is required. Visa should be issued at your country of citizenship. Please, allow adequate time for the processing of your visa, as increased administrative delays have recently been reported in several countries. Finally, it bears pointing out that if you are getting a Brazilian tourist visa for the first time, you have 90 days from the issue date stamped on your visa inside your passport to travel to Brazil, thereby “activating” your visa for the five-year life of the visa. So, ironically you can neither wait too late to start the visa application process nor begin the process too early and have the visa expire before “activation”. The best course of action is to call the nearest Brazilian consulate/embassy or to check their website for suggested deadlines for foreign nationals submitting visa applications.

Formal Letters of Invitation

We recognize that some meeting participants will require formal letters of invitation, in order to avail themselves of funding opportunities or, in some cases, to obtain a visa to Brazil for the meeting. If you are in need of such a letter, please contact organizing committee member, Erick José Ramo Silva (ejrsilva81@gmail.com).

The national language is Portuguese. English and Spanish is spoken in most hotels, restaurants and tourist attractions.

The local currency is the Brazilian "Real" (pronounced like greeting your friend Alfred, “Hey Al”). Major credit cards (Visa, Master Card, Diners Club and American Express) are accepted at most hotels.

Banking Facilities

Extended banking facilities are available at Guarulhos International Airport 7 days/week between 9 am and 9 pm. There are automatic cash dispensers, usually located in connection with a bank, which accept a variety of international credit cards. The cards accepted are indicated on the dispenser. Please do not expect to find ATM machines. Please note that there will not be bank facilities provided during and at the Congress venue.

Tips and taxes

A 10% tip is usually already included in the bill at restaurants and bars. You are not obliged to pay this tip, but usually nobody complains. Of course you may leave a higher tip if you wish. If the tip is not included, it will be explicitly indicated in the bill. Usually, all prices have already included the Brazilian federal taxes. An exception could be the hotel prices, which may add a 5% to 10% tax to the given rates.

Health

It is essential to have health insurance in Brazil, as hospital and medical fees are expensive. For most regions of the country you don't need to worry about vaccinations. Yellow fever shots are necessary if you plan to visit Amazon region, which is 3.000 km (1,860 miles) from the site of the meeting in Aguas de São Pedro.
